Being An Autism Parent Made Me A Better Writer
April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day, which in my house means advocacy, acceptance, and endless education. Being an autism parent rewired how I see the world. It taught me that communication is layered, that behavior is often a translation of something deeper, and that not everyone experiences sound, light, smell, touch, or emotion the same way. As a writer, that’s invaluable.
It forced me to slow down and ask better questions about my characters. What are they really reacting to? What details are overwhelming them and how does that manifest? What are they not saying but wish they could?
Autism made me a sharper writer that’s far more aware of invisible battles, the tolls they take, and the triumphs they produce.
