Two weeks to @bookfairatbelair, and this year will be better than ever! So many talented authors, so many terrific books, and so many fun vendors - come join the party! This stanza opens HEIR OF THE OTHERWORLD. It's from My Dark Rosaleen, a traditional Irish ballad based on a very old Irish poem. The song was a rebellion, of sorts. When the British controlled Ireland, it was forbidden to speak or sing of anything that smacked of dissent or Irish nationalism. My Dark Rosaleen was commonly sung in pubs and at street fairs - with everyone of Irish blood knowing that "Rosaleen" was their name for Ireland. The full poem/song speaks of trials and dark times that will be vanquished by the indomitable spirit of their dark Rosaleen. It's a haunting, hopeful thing. Read it if you can. Anyway, HEIR OF THE OTHERWORLD was originally titled "My Dark Rosaleen," but I felt that was too sacred a work for me to co-opt the title. Still, I had to have Rosaleen front and center in this story. #writerlife In my new YA Fantasy, HEIR OF THE OTHERWORLD, Rosaleen has been trained by her mother (the goddess of death and battle) with all sorts of weaponry from a very young age. Of all her skills, she's proudest of her ability to wield an ancient handstone - a skill that she demonstrates at a critical moment in battle. Honestly so annoying!
