Do You Listen To Music While You Write?

Music can be such an inspiration.

It’s a fact that a lot of writers listen to music while they write, and even have specific songs that motivate and energize them. Stephenie Meyer (of Twilight fame, if you’ve been living under a rock for the last ten years) publishes soundtracks in the back of her novels that accompany certain chapters.

And then there’s me. I can’t write to music at all. I mean at all.

That’s not because I don’t like music. I am inspired by it on a regular basis. I have songs that trigger something in my brain and I’ll sit and write and write and write until the words capture that feeling.

But listen while I write? Not a chance. I’d get carried away, singing along at the top of my lungs, derailing my train of thought and delaying every word that I’m trying to put on the page. I can’t multi-task like that. Music demands too much from me.

What about you? Do you write to a soundtrack? Do you think it helps?
